What We Can't Say in Live Captioning... Says the Most

At Line 21, we work across live events, streaming broadcasts, and real-time communications. These are high stakes and trust-or-bust environments. And yet, for all the critical work we do, you'll rarely hear us say: “Here's who we work with.”

Valid Questions

“Can you show us examples of clients like us?”

“Can we speak to someone you've captioned for?”

“Do you have a case study for that kind of event?”

And the honest answer is… often, no. Because in this industry, NDAs are everywhere. They are the norm, and our silence echoes with intent.

Confidentiality is the rule, not the exception

When we're captioning live content, it's often not meant for public consumption. That could mean:

  • Internal communications with sensitive information
  • High-profile events still under wraps
  • Live support for participants who require discretion or anonymity
  • Partnerships where we serve AV teams or umbrella agencies, not the end client directly

In many of these cases, we're not discreet by choice, but by contractual obligation. We sign NDAs, respect confidentiality clauses, and build our entire workflow around the assumption that we won't be able to show or tell the outside world what we've done.

While it's not a marketing team's dream, it is part of the service.

The paradox of trust

Trust is everything in live captioning. Our clients choose us because they know we'll handle their content sensitively. With no leaks, no over-sharing, and by allowing the spotlight to dim on collaborative celebration.

But here's the paradox: the more trust we earn, the less we can say. Our best work is often invisible. Our proudest moments happen behind digital doors. The more high profile the client, the more likely we'll never be able to say, mime or ‘rhymes with' their name.

So what do you share publicly? We - and many others in the industry - focus on platforms and ecosystems. “We captioned a session using Zoom,” or “We provided captions for an event on Teams.” These are valid references, but they don't reflect the specificity of the clients or the trust those relationships are built on.

Our reality is different. We're often brought in by AV teams, or by communications providers operating under another brand. We're the silent partner under the umbrella. And often, the end client doesn't even want to know our name. Our success means everything just works.
